The only silver lining is that no one can imagine Big Pharma sinking any lower
Would you accept $1 million if offered on the condition that you mustn’t ask where it came from? I wouldn’t. I don’t understand how anyone could, except perhaps in a life-or-death situation (starving children, an emergency operation, etc.)
The story of Valeant Pharmaceuticals – which has already been in the news recently for price-gouging, tax sheltering, and inappropriate connections to a specialty pharmacy corporation – anticipating legalization in California and doubling the price of a physician-assisted suicide drug, from $1,500 to $3,000, raises the question of how these pharma executives and investors can cheerfully accept the extra profits and dividends. Money squeezed from a person so ill that s/he has decided to end their life!?
The madness of these unconscionable actions must cease. For that matter, the madness of Big Pharma at-large and the madness of the entire healthcare system in America must cease.
There are those who would object loudly to their separation from massive quantities of money, of course, and there are many of them. Let them object. We cannot continue to put profits before patients, period. Pilfering money from the pockets of dying patients! This can only be turned into a positive by the American people ensuring it is the final straw – the one that completely breaks the system so we may start anew.
What do we have to lose? Are there many people who still believe the United States has a wonderful healthcare system?
The Daily Beast news site has already labeled Big Pharma “America’s new mafia.” What happens when a mafia is allowed to proliferate? Omertà! Nothing. It continues to grow with impunity. One mustn’t kid oneself that such as The Daily Beast exaggerate. Simply glance at the headlines! Criminality exists in American pharmaceuticals.
In my upcoming novel, DEADLY PRESCRIPTION, you witness the crimes of Big Pharma in a fictionalized format. Ethics crimes, crimes of greed, violent crimes.
Those who profit greedily from the pain of others dearly wish, genuinely hope, that enjoyment of the ill-gotten gains can be separated from the suffering through which it traveled. They cannot. The money is tainted. Painted with invisible suffering and blood. That’s a fact in the drug cartels of Mexico, in America’s new mafia – Big Pharma – and in NASDAQ and the NYSE.
Let’s not forget that stockholders in pharmaceutical corporations can say no to all of this. One must check one’s own portfolio before pointing fingers at the drug company executives. Investors fund the actions of the Valeants of the world.
Talking with station KQED, which first reported Valeant’s price hike on Seconal, Dr. David Grube, a family doctor in Oregon, where physician-assisted death has been legal for 20 years said, “It’s just pharmaceutical company greed. It’s not a complicated thing to make, there’s no research being done on it, there’s no development. That to me is unconscionable.”
DEADLY PRESCRIPTION, a novel about the criminal world under, around, and within Big Pharma, arrives mid-2016.
