Greed without conscience respects no borders: After scathing indictments in the U.S. last year, Big Pharma wrongdoing reports pile up in UK
For the love of money is the root of all evil:
which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith,
and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
– 1 Timothy 6:10
At some point it becomes, not a question of if some pharmaceutical companies buy results of clinical trials, but about to what extent they do so. And the absolutely paramount question must be how those who reap these ill-gotten gains can actually enjoy them, live with themselves, and/or sleep at night!
The British daily Independent published, in recent days, a headline that by all rights ought to be top of the news everywhere: “Pharmaceutical companies cause doctors to receive biased information about drugs, ‘costing hundreds of thousands of lives.’”
“Hundreds of thousands of lives.” If the Independent is to be believed – and the article provides plenty of reasons to believe it – that’s hundreds of thousands of negligent homicides in the UK alone. If the pharma companies purposely misinformed doctors and knew doctors would unwittingly prescribe the harmful drugs to patients, then a case could be made for… well, perhaps it’s better not to use that word quite yet. “More will be revealed,” wrote the American author Bill Wilson. Besides, there’s plenty to get worked up about without “going there.”
The answer to the question, “What kind of people would indirectly cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of patients for financial gain?” can only be one: psychopaths. The question of just how many psychopaths occupy executive suites in pharmaceutical corporations around the world is a bit more complicated.
CognitivePolicyWorks.com estimates that one percent of the general population is psychopathic. With a 2012 world population of approximately 7 billion, there could be as many as 70,000,000 psychopaths living today.
Of course, not all decision makers in pharma are psychopaths. In fact, there are many great men and women of conscience working in the industry. Yet, when we see, time and time again, decisions (and obfuscations) being made in the name of profit and, clearly, to the detriment of patient populations, we must speak.
We can’t turn away from the facts that stand before us. Big Pharma is a $3 trillion industry per year, and that alone ensures that some greedy people are attracted to it. We mustn’t turn away from what the domestic and international headlines are saying, nor should we ignore the likely connection between those headlines and descriptions of the psychopath, such as CognitivePolicyWorks.com’s: “These people are more likely to be risk takers, opportunists motivated by self-interest and greed, and inclined to dominate or subjugate those around them through manipulative means.”
What is the Independent’s article telling us? Pharmaceutical corporations are causing doctors to quite literally write DEADLY PRESCRIPTIONs. Here, again, is life imitating fiction! As with Wall Street in the 1980s, the time has arrived for Big Pharma as a hotbed for crime, both real and fictional – to the extent that there is any difference.
The novel DEADLY PRESCRIPTION, by Robert Marx, arrives mid-2016.
